Featured Case Study

Smart Workforce Management System

A cloud-ready workforce management platform designed to improve staff training visibility, rota awareness, compliance tracking and role-based access within a large retail-style environment.

Node.js Express MySQL Azure JWT Authentication Role-Based Access

The Challenge

A Smart Workforce Management System (SWMS) was developed as a final-year project informed by previous experience of working with both Excel and Excel VBA applications that were store based. These applications featured no centralisation or backups, used a complicated user interface and featured a lack of data security.

Objectives

Key objectives were derived from both personal experiences and research conducted through former colleagues and were identified as:

  • Improve visibility of staff training records.
  • Track completed, due and overdue training.
  • Support rota and staff availability awareness.
  • Apply secure login and role-based access.
  • Create a responsive system suitable for desktop and mobile use.

The Solution

The solution was to design, develop and build a working prototype that demonstrated how a cloud-based workforce system could reduce reliance on spreadsheets, improve compliance visibility and support better operational decision-making.

The system was designed around a central MySQL database, with Node.js and Express providing the backend API and HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Bootstrap providing the user interface. Authentication and role-based access controls were introduced to ensure users could access only the information and functionality appropriate to their role.

The Result

A working application was produced with secure login, a training matrix, compliance tracking, employee records, administrative access and database-driven updates. The system demonstrated how training and workforce information could be viewed and updated more efficiently through a central digital platform.

My Role

I was responsible for the analysis, system design, database design, development, testing and evaluation of the SWMS project. I designed and implemented the application architecture, user interface, database structure, authentication and role-based access controls, and evaluated the system through user feedback and testing.

A practical blend of business intelligence, data analysis, and decision support

Business Intelligence Case Study

Customer Retention & Sales Analytics Dashboard

A business intelligence dashboard developed to explore customer behaviour, sales performance, churn, refunds and regional trends using data visualisation and reporting techniques within Power BI.

Power BI Business Intelligence Data Visualisation Excel KPI Reporting Data Analysis

The Challenge

Businesses can hold large volumes of customer and sales data without necessarily being able to identify the patterns and trends contained within it. The challenge for this project was to transform raw customer and transactional data into clear, accessible business information that could support management awareness and decision-making.

The project focused particularly on customer retention, churn, sales performance, refunds and regional trends, with the aim of presenting these areas through an interactive and visually accessible dashboard.

Objectives

  • Analyse customer retention and churn trends.

  • Visualise sales and refund performance.

  • Compare regional business performance.

  • Identify customer spending behaviour.

  • Create KPI-focused dashboards for reporting.

  • Improve business visibility through interactive analytics.

  • Explore how business intelligence tools support decision-making.

The Solution

The solution was to develop an interactive Power BI dashboard that transformed the available customer and sales data into a series of visual reports and key performance indicators. The dashboard was structured to allow users to examine customer retention, churn, sales, refunds and regional performance without having to interpret the underlying raw datasets directly.

Data preparation and analysis were supported using Excel-based datasets, while Power BI was used to create the data model, visualisations, KPI reporting and interactive filtering. Particular attention was given to dashboard layout and visual clarity so that important information could be identified quickly and presented in a form suitable for business decision-making.

The Result

A functional Power BI business intelligence dashboard was produced, providing customer retention metrics, churn analysis, sales trends, regional performance comparisons, refund tracking and KPI-based reporting.

The completed dashboard demonstrated how interactive data visualisation can make patterns and performance indicators easier to identify, helping transform raw business data into information that can support management awareness and decision-making.

My Role

I was responsible for preparing and analysing the project data, identifying appropriate KPIs, designing the dashboard structure and developing the Power BI visualisations. I also considered how the information should be presented from a business-user perspective, with particular emphasis on clarity, accessibility and the ability to identify meaningful trends from the underlying data.

MAFP Project Industries BI dashboard screenshot

Power BI Dashboard, for fictitious company MAFP Project Industries.

What I Built

The dashboard was developed using Microsoft Power BI, with Excel-based datasets used as the source for data preparation and analysis. The development process included data cleaning, data modelling, KPI identification, visualisation design and interactive filtering.

The dashboard was structured around different areas of business performance, allowing customer behaviour, sales, refunds, retention and regional trends to be explored through a consistent reporting interface. Particular attention was given to presenting complex information in a form that could be quickly understood by business users.

Key Skills

  • Business Intelligence & Analytics.

  • Data Visualisation.

  • Customer Retention Analysis.

  • KPI Dashboard Design.

  • Data Modelling.

  • Business Reporting.

  • Trend Analysis.

  • Decision Support Systems.

Business Insights

The dashboard demonstrated how customer retention, churn, sales performance, refunds and regional differences can be examined together to provide a broader view of business performance. Presenting these measures visually makes trends and potential areas of concern easier to identify than when working directly with large datasets.

The project also demonstrated how business intelligence can improve management visibility by converting operational data into accessible information that can contribute to planning and evidence-based decision-making.

Reflection

This project strengthened my understanding of business intelligence, data visualisation and dashboard design, particularly the importance of transforming complex data into information that can be understood quickly by its intended audience.

The development process highlighted that an effective dashboard depends on more than the visualisations themselves. Data quality, appropriate KPI selection, report structure and consistent presentation all influence whether the information is genuinely useful to the user.

The project also allowed me to combine technical data-analysis skills with my previous business and operational experience. This helped me consider the dashboard from the perspective of the people who might use the information for reporting, performance monitoring and decision-making.

Future Improvements

Further development of the dashbaord could explore:

  • Real-time or automated data integration.

  • Predictive analytics.

  • Automated reporting and scheduled updates.

  • Enhanced customer segmentation.

  • Additional drill-down and comparative reporting.
